The Central Wheatbelt is a wonder waiting to be enjoyed. Its massive granite outcrops surrounded by natural bushlands are a haven for bird life and a delight for bushwalking or wildflower enthusiasts and offer spectacular views from their summits.
Early explorers, such as John Septimus Roe, selected these rocks as camp sites as they were an excellent source of water, good feed for their horses and high points to take their bearings. Later sandalwood cutters and settlers camped nearby clearing shrubs and woodlands to develop vast areas that became rich grain, sheep and cattle enterprises. The open spaces and night skies are awe inspiring to travellers.
Glimpses of fauna or a beautiful flower on a bush at any time of year; a picnic or BBQ at a tranquil picnic area or camping under the millions of stars, are simple delights of the area.
Friendly people in rural towns, each unique in some way, will welcome the traveller to a historic pub, motel, B&B, farmstay or shady clean caravan park.

The Shire of Kondinin is large by wheatbelt standards with some 7,340 square kilometers of land. The town of Kondinin is approximately 280km from Perth. The Shire on average is 40km wide and approximately 200km long.

The eastern third of the Shire is uncleared and that area becomes part of the Great Western Woodlands - a land area the size of Switzerland.

The Shire has three towns within is boundary - Kondinin, Karlgarin and Hyden, there are also a number of mining companies operating within the shire and boasts two active underground mines.
The population of the Shire is approximately 1,100 people with another 500 people residing in the Forrestania area - though employed on fly-in, fly-out arrangement at the minesite.
The main activities within the Shire is Grain Growing (Wheat, Canola, Peas, Lupins, Barley and Hay), Sheep, Cattle Feedlots, Tourism, Mining - (high grade Nickel sulphides, Gold and Lithium - although the last two commodities aren't being currently mined they are being actively explored).
